Galion High School - Diploma Types

Under current law, there are two types of diplomas which may be issued to Ohio high school graduates:  the regular diploma and the honors diploma.  The regular diploma will be issued to any student who has successfully completed the high school curriculum and passed 9th grade proficiency tests in all areas.  An honors diploma will be issued to any students who has successfully completed the high school curriculum, passed the 9th grade proficiency tests in all areas, and satisfied other criteria established by the State Board of Education.

Class of 2006 must pass the Ninth Grade Proficiency in the following content areas:  Writing, Reading, Math,  Citizenship, & Science

Class of 2007 additional requirements: A total of 3 science credits are needed. * * *Pass the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT):  Writing, Reading, Math,   Citizenship, & Science (replaces the Ninth Grade Proficiency Test)

* One credit (or two half credits) must include Business Technology, Foreign Language, and/or Fine Arts

 

Honors Diploma Requirements (College Prep Curriculum)

Academic Diploma with Honors for classes 2011 and beyond

English

4 units

Math

4 units Including:  Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II or the  equivalent and another higher level course or a four-year sequence of courses that contain equivalent content

Science

4 units, including physics and chemistry

Foreign Language

3 units (must include no less than 2 units for which credit is sought), i.e., 3 units of one language or two units each of two languages

Fine Arts

1 unit

Social Studies

4 units

Business/Technology

GPA 3.5 on a 4.0 scale

ACT/SAT score (excluding scores from the writing sections) 27 ACT / 1210 SAT

 

Honors Diploma - Vocational/Technical Curriculum

Students must complete at least 9 of the 10 requirements listed below:

English

4 credits (may include one credit of Applied Communication)

Math

3 credits (Include:  Algebra, Geometry, or equivalent sequence)

Science

3 credits

Social Studies

3 credits

Foreign Language/ Business Technology

2 credits of foreign language or business technology

Vocational Curriculum

3 credits above the minimum requirement in a student's vocational area

Additional credits from 6 areas above or fine arts

2 credits

* Maintain an overall GPA of 3.5 up to the last grading period of the senior year

* Complete a career passport, including the demonstration of proficiency in 95% of the occupational core competencies as judged by at least two content experts

* Obtain the score(s) on the 12 grade proficiency tests designate by the State Board of Education or obtain a composite score of 27 on the ACT or an equivalent composite score on the SAT.
